TIL lamp 2‘Resisting Hospitality’:

On behalf of community / migrants: The intention with the Turkish tea glass lamp is site specific to Dalston Lane, that has a big community of Turkish citizens. But due to the re-generation of the area, cleaning up and evening out the asphalt to welcome new citizens who pay higher rents, due to the huge interest in the new and cooler Dalston/London  Fields area. I wanted to give attention to this, in my opinion gentrification. By letting the Turks see themselves in the window display of a newly ‘mushroomed’ gallery in this area.

From a time slice in my life.

Stamford Hill. Where I was fascinated by Judaism once again in my life. Although this time very different from my years at teachers college where I did a short stajier week at a Jewish School in Ryparken. Here I wanted to even marry a jew just to get inside their culture and become like them. Judaism in those years seemed like the ‘real’ and only religion to follow. It seemed so pure.

In Stamford Hill I was silently and discretely stalking men, women and children in my own ethnographic way. Listening in to their conversations, trying to make their children greet me on the streets, taking pictures of them from my house window. They didnt care about me. I was very disappointed with them. Thats the overall feeling they left me with. Their isolation, their hostility and selfishness. But they did also have a whole history of violence talking against my friendly approach.

This photo is from our garden. Our house was owned by a Jewish man, the houses on both sides of us were inhabited by Jews. And of course these were wigs of the bold shaved ladies that were living in those houses. Displayed wigs, in different styles. It was indeed interesting. Although my orientalizing of them does bother me a lot!!
